The World's Best Cat and Dog Doors

DoubleMag™ Seal Technology

The best seal for the world's most energy-efficient pet doors

What's so special about DoubleMag™?

Magnet-to-Magnet Seal for Maximum Efficiency

The challenge for making an airtight seal on a cat or dog door is that the seal has to be strong enough to withstand the force of wind, yet easy for a small pet to open.

We’ve solved this problem with a combination of proprietary magnet technologies and our unique 2-in-1 flap design. Our doors with DoubleMag Technology make an airtight seal – withstanding high winds, yet letting pets enter and exit with little effort. It seals like a refrigerator, but “unzips” like a zipper when pets want to enter or exit.

The MOST Energy-Efficient Cat and Dog Doors

Official Laboratory Testing

No stupid comparisons

If you are doing research on doggie doors, you’ve probably seen lots of claims of energy efficiency. What’s often in the small print is precisely what those claims are based upon, and there’s usually a good reason they keep it in the small print. We recommend that you read the details behind all pet door energy efficiency claims closely and compare them.

Real, meaningful testing

We don’t make wild, unsubstantiated claims about our products. Instead, we have had our doors tested by one of the leading architectural testing laboratories in North America to prove how energy-efficient they are.

The lab put our doors through some of the same tests used to qualify windows and human doors for building standards from the IRC (International Residential Code), the NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council), Passive House, and Energy Star. We think we performed quite nicely, but look at the results below and judge for yourself.

Results: 10X More Airtight than Energy Star Requirements

RANGER Pet Doors by Freedom Pet Pass were evaluated using the same test required for windows and human doors (ASTM E-283) at an accredited, independent laboratory. Freedom Pet Pass cat and dog doors performed 10X better than Canadian requirements for Energy Star certification – leaking 0.15 L/s/m2 compared to the 1.5 L/s/m2 limit for human doors and windows.

Under similar conditions at a local lab, the “best selling” pet door leaked an astonishing 95 L/s/m2. That’s 63X worse than Energy Star requirements for human doors and over 600X worse than the RANGER Pet Door!

Results: The Only Pet Door to Meet Title 24 Requirements

Freedom Pet Pass energy-efficiency specifications label

California’s Title 24 building energy-efficiency requirements are some of the most rigorous in the world. In late 2014, the California Energy Commission issued guidance for energy-efficiency performance required for pet doors. As far as we know, these were the first building code requirements for pet doors.

RANGER Pet Doors are the only dog doors that meet those requirements. In fact, our DoubleMag seal gives our dog doors an air leakage rate 10X lower than California’s requirements, which are the same as Canadian Energy Star requirements for human doors.

Results: Real-World Performance Validated by Blower Door Testing

note: The flap has to be pushed closed in the video only because of the constant negative pressure from the blower door test. This test uses a powerful fan to suck air out of the house to find small air leaks and improve efficiency. This is not a condition experienced in the real world. Our doors easily close on their own.

Blower door testing is a technique used by building engineers to test whole-house efficiency (specifically, air leakage). Many older houses lose up to 1/2 of their total heat through air leakage, so this is an important technique for understanding building performance.

The video shows blower door testing of a house with a RANGER Pet Door by Freedom Pet Pass. This was actual testing performed in the ultra-efficient 16th and Nebraska Passive House (read more below). The standard pressure of -50 Pa is applied (to simulate wind blowing toward house), and the testers look for leaks.

You can hear the testing technicians’ comments about there being no leakage and the test conditions being similar to a 25 mph wind (it’s actually like a 25 mph wind blowing directly at all portions of your home at the same time). As you can see, the RANGER Pet Door passed with flying colors.

Results: Ultra-Efficient Passive House Performance Documented

Recreating the American Home - book by Mary James

Blake Bilyeu, of Bilyeu Builders, was commissioned to build a house that met the strict energy efficiency guidelines of the Passive House standard. The install of the RANGER Pet Door by Freedom Pet Pass was so successful that it was specifically mentioned in the book Recreating the American Home by Mary James.

“This Freedom Pet Pass door made everyone happy, especially Bilyeu, when a subsequent blower door test came in at 0.2 ACH50 – well below the 0.6 ACH performance target. Bilyeu’s team performed the blower door test as soon as the windows, doors, and pet door were installed–long before insulation and drywall could block access to any potentially leaky areas.”

Premium Materials - Premium Winter Performance

Made from top-grade materials for long-lasting performance in the toughest environments

Features of Freedom Pet Pass door-mounted pet door

Materials of Construction

Insulated Rugged Flap System – The insulated flap system is made from premium materials for maximum energy-efficiency, pet safety, and durability. The flap has an insulating SBR rubber core, protected with marine-grade canvas on each side. The flap seal is made from thermoplastic polyolefin, a material also used for industrial roofing

Cellular PVC Frame – Strong, weatherproof, and mold-resistant, and 3,000X more insulating than metal frames used on lower-end dog doors.

Locking Security Panel – The locking security panel comes with all door-mounted and wall-mounted pet doors. It is made from 100% acrylic, the same material used in many grades of bulletproof glass. The “up-and-in” insertion of the panel means no additional clearance is needed around the pet door. When locked, the security panel gives a similar level of security to a locked window or human door.

note: to prevent injury to pets and damage to the door, do not use the security panel to lock your pets outside.

Flap Colors

RANGER Pet Doors are available with standard-colored flaps (chocolate/tan and grey) or any of nine colors (chocolate, tan, grey, black, white, burgundy, royal blue, forest green, and True Timber camouflage). Contact us for the Mix-n-Match option to pick different interior and exterior colors, for a total of 81 different customizable looks.

Clear Flaps

We do manufacture clear flaps for our S, M, and L doors. They are not recommended for use in areas prone to cold temperatures, to the point where we don’t offer them as an option on our Canadian website. The issue is that the nature of all clear flap materials causes them to crack and fail in cold weather (-20°C and below). We use the best clear material available, USDA-rated “low temperature” grade string-reinforced vinyl. While this is better than competitive products, it does not perform to our high standards in typical Canadian weather.

If you are interested in a clear flap, even knowing all of the drawbacks, please contact us and we can make arrangements.

New Construction Ready

Engineered for New Construction

RANGER wall-mounted pet doors are made for new construction applications and major remodels. They are designed to be installed at the same time as windows and doors using the same techniques.

Builder-Friendly

Builders will appreciate the window-like design that allows for the use of sill pan flashing, and the included nail fin will allow them to properly integrate the pet door into the weather barrier system.

Inspector-Friendly

All RANGER Pet Doors come with energy-efficiency ratings attached for easy reference by code officials.

Not Just for New Builds

Of course, RANGER Pet Doors work just fine for an already-built home, too.
